Why Xbox Game Pass Was So Great Last Month

Expert Verified By

Game Pass reminded the industry yet again why it stands as the king of value among the dozen subscriptions currently available to millions of gamers worldwide.

Story Highlight
  • Xbox Game Pass delivered on its promise of exciting games last month.
  • The first wave saw releases like Assassin’s Creed Mirage joining the service.
  • Later, the likes of Gears of War: Reloaded and Persona 4 Golden continued the momentum.

Xbox Game Pass always delivers excellent value for its customers, providing access to games worth thousands of dollars. However, last month was more exciting than usual, thanks to a slew of new and highly anticipated additions to the service.

The first wave of titles on the service made their debut on August 5, while the second wave arrived on August 19.

Why it matters: Although there have been doubts about the viability of Xbox Game Pass, nobody can deny its value proposition.

The Excitement Was Palpable

2025 Is A Huge Year For Game Pass

Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass announcements typically see a lot of buzz, and August was no exception. Indeed, announcements for the subscription turned more than a few heads, and I was excited for one particular release. Personally, I love that Xbox Game Pass offers immediate access to an incredible selection of games.

No other service in the industry brings this much value to the average gamer, and I suggest you buy Xbox Game Pass if you have any interest in titles like Doom: The Dark Ages, Indiana Jones, Starfield, and more.

The First Wave

Assassin's Creed Mirage
Assassin’s Creed Mirage Took Things Back To Basics

During the first wave, Microsoft brought Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Aliens: Fireteam Elite to the service. I personally enjoyed the former, but both games are a steal when paired with a subscription service.

The former follows a more traditional Assassin’s Creed story featuring Basim. Meanwhile, Aliens: Fireteam Elite is all Xenomorph onslaught and strategic thinking. Xbox Game Pass also offered the following titles during the first wave:

  • Rain World
  • Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector
  • Lonely Mountains: Snowriders
  • MechWarrior 5: Clans
  • Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap
  • 9 Kings (Game Preview Only)

Continuing The Momentum

Gears of War: Reloaded
Gears of War: Reloaded Saw Millions of Players Last Month

Wave 2 packed a bigger punch in August, with Blacksmith Master (Game Preview) and Void/Breaker leading the lineup on August 19. Blacksmith Master is all about the medieval era, while Void/Breaker focuses on experiencing the thrills of war.

My personal favorite game on the list was Gears of War: Reloaded. Alongside this solid re-release of the iconic first Gears of War entry, Xbox Game Pass also offered Persona 4 Golden and Goat Simulator Remastered last month.

Then came Dragon Age: Veilguard on August 28, and although this game is far from the best in the Dragon Age IP, it certainly isn’t worth writing off completely. All in all, the following games were part of the second wave:

  • Blacksmith Master
  • Void/Breaker
  • Goat Simulator Remastered
  • Persona 4 Golden
  • Herdling
  • Gears of War: Reloaded
  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard

As expected, some games also left the service last month, including the likes of Ben 10 Power Trip and Borderlands 3.

Still, August was a major month for the service. Between Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Gears of War: Reloaded, Dragon Age: Veilguard, and more, Xbox Game Pass proved yet again why it remains the most budget-friendly subscription in the industry.
