Why I Believe ARM-Based Laptops Will Make It Big?

Expert Verified By

ARM-based laptops are not getting enough attention and it's unfair!

Story Highlights
  • ARM laptops are integrated with processors based on ARM technology for efficient computing.
  • These laptops offer longer battery life, less power consumption, slimmer designs, and the ability to run high-end processes.
  • Big companies are already switching to ARM-based CPUs in their laptops, consequently leading to an increase in market value in the upcoming years.

ARM-based laptops have been around since the late 2010s and have rightly created their place in the market. With robust specs and features, ARM-based laptops can make it big in the tech industry.

What Are ARM Laptops?

The Acorn Risc Machine (ARM) architecture is a type of Reduction Instruction Set Computing (RISC) that outperforms the traditional x86 processors in terms of efficiency and capabilities (Gupta & Sharma, 2021). The ARM chips were previously limited to smartphones. However, with the rapid advancement in ARM architecture, its usage is now extended to laptops, VRs, Nintendo, and other devices.

ARM relies on third-party companies like Qualcomm, NVIDIA, and Apple for the architecture and production of their processors.

Benefits Of ARM In Laptops

Several aspects make an ARM-based laptop different from the ones with traditional chips. For example, ARM laptops are slimmer and lighter than their counterparts. This is because ARM processors generate less heat, eliminating the need for built-in laptop fans.

Another reason to get an ARM laptop is its lower power consumption, resulting in a longer battery life. Apple used the ARM technology in the Apple Silicon chips for M1 and M2 processors powering the latest MacBook Pro series. They claimed it offers a power-efficient performance with the longest ever battery life ever witnessed in a Mac device- up to 22 hours!

So, I had to test the laptop myself to believe it. The battery lasted almost a day, even though I performed rigorous tasks like video editing and light gaming. Therefore, the claim is indeed valid.

Apart from these, ARM-based laptops have become much better at handling demanding computing tasks, like heavy gaming, lengthy calculations, high-end graphic designing, and more. The Total Compute Solutions ARM offers make AI-reliant experiences possible, such as video enhancement, responsive app launch, and multitasking, as per the ARM’s official website.

With ARM processors, you can conveniently run Android applications on your laptop due to enhanced compatibility. Many modern Android smartphones are built with ARM chips (Al-Sheikh et al., 2023). Thus, its native applications are, of course, compatible with ARM processors. Because laptops have finally embraced the same technology, the apps can comfortably function on them.

Current Analysis And Future Predictions

The ACER Spin 513 features a Kompaio 1380 chipset with 8 CPU cores based on ARM technology. Meanwhile, the ACER Chromebook 514 is based on an Intel Core i3 chipset. In a comparison by ARM Newsroom, ACER Spin 513 offers +4.7% better performance and a longer battery life of up to 5 additional hours.

As per a report by Next MSC, the ARM laptop market was valued at $9.2 billion in 2023 and is expected to go up to $52.65 billion by 2030. One factor for the high demand is the rapid popularization of cloud gaming, AI, and Big Data that require high-end processors to achieve maximum functionality.

The interest of big sharks like Apple, Lenovo, Samsung, and Dell is quickly increasing in ARM technology. Recently, they all began experimenting with ARM processors in their laptops to keep up with the innovations. Considering these aspects, there is no doubt that ARM-based laptops will go big in the coming years.

On the other hand, there are not many big names in the CPU industry except Intel and AMD. It will be interesting to see how these well-established giants take on their quickly-progressing rival, ARM.
