What I Thought About Freedom Wars Remastered

Freedom Wars Remastered looks amazing!

Story Highlights

  • The improved visuals make the game more immersive for new and returning players.
  • Multiplayer and combat mechanics are now far smoother, making the game more engaging
  • Although some issues, such as a steep learning curve and repetitive missions, are still part of the game.

The remaster of Freedom Wars available on Steam, has rekindled my appreciation for this unique action RPG game. Originally released on the PS Vita, it offers a mix of dystopian storytelling, multiplayer, and fast-paced combat.

Freedom Wars Remastered enhances these qualities while introducing a modern polish to the game, making it easily accessible on all kinds of devices and software. Here’s what stood out for me in the remastered version.

A World Built on Oppression

The story of Freedom Wars remains one of its most substantial aspects. The game is set in a dystopian future where society is controlled by city-states called Panopticons. People in the game known as “Sinners” are sentenced to massive prison sentences for simply existing and must pay off their debt by undertaking dangerous missions.

The game’s morally complex and harsh setting feels more immersive than ever now, with the visual upgrades from the remaster. The sharper graphics and enhanced visuals bring the game’s environment and the struggles of the characters to life.

Gameplay That Excels

The gameplay of Freedom Wars has always stood out for me, and the remastered version enhances it even further. Players engage in fast-paced strategic battles with massive enemies called Abductors. The overall gameplay resembles that of Fortnite but with monsters.

Players can use a range of melee weapons, firearms, and the classic Thorn (a grappling hook), which adds versatility and tactical depth. In the remastered version, the controls are smoother, making combat feel more fluid and responsive.

The co-op multiplayer mode, which bears a resemblance to Monster Hunter in terms of large-scale battles against formidable creatures, with weapon crafting is now more seamless, ensuring a good experience when playing with friends.

Stunning Visual and Audio Upgrades

One of the most notable improvements in the remastered version is its upgraded visuals and effects. The high-resolution textures, dynamic lighting, and better animations make the game’s futuristic setting more vibrant and detailed.

The environments, from urban landscapes to desolate battlefields, feel more alive and visually striking. The audio design has also improved with enhanced sound effects and a powerful soundtrack that heightens tensions and excitement in battles.

Challenges That Persist

While the game has improved significantly, and the remastered version does an excellent job of modernizing it, some issues of the original still persist. The game’s learning curve is steep, especially for new players, and some may find the gameplay mechanics overwhelming at first.

Additionally, some missions can feel repetitive, affecting the game’s overall long-term replayability. Lastly, the lack of new content in the remastered version may disappoint returning players who came for fresh missions and storylines.

Why It Stands Out

What sets Freedom Wars Remastered apart is its unique blend of storytelling and gameplay. The game offers thrilling action and introduces players to themes of oppression, freedom, and sacrifice, similar to those of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

The harsh rules of the Panopticon and the struggles of the Sinners make the game profoundly emotional and more than just an action game.

Final Thoughts

Freedom Wars Remastered successfully brings a classic title to modern platforms, improving its visuals, gameplay, and overall accessibility. Despite some lingering flaws, the game remains an excellent experience that every action RPG fan should try.

Whether you are revisiting the game or are a new player, the remastered version of Freedom Wars ensures that players have the best experience.
