2024 has been Warner Bros.’s worst year, as the studio lost over $384 million on games. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was among the biggest failures last year, as the title not only missed its sales expectations but also caused the studio to lose $200 million.

Following a disastrous year, Warner Bros. appears to have some plans for 2025. The studio plans to bet on iconic franchises like Mortal Kombat and even new releases like Hogwarts Legacy.

Why it matters: A sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is already in the production phase and has been treated as a big priority at the studio.

In a recent letter to the shareholders, Warner Bros. claimed that they are going to focus their games business around four tentpole franchises, which have also generated over $1 billion in consumer sales over the years.

Hogwarts Legacy was 2023’s top-selling new release, and the title has already sold over 24 million copies. While the expectations have been set very high for the sequel, an industry insider believes that the Hogwarts Legacy sequel is unlikely to meet expectations.
