Won't Compromise Battery Life For Compute Power!

Story Highlight
  • Valve is in no rush to launch the Steam Deck 2.
  • The company is waiting for a true generational leap that balances both performance and efficiency.
  • Work on the next handheld is moving forward with these goals in mind.

Valve has never shied away from addressing the Steam Deck 2. Following its first successful foray into handheld gaming, the company is more motivated than ever to find bigger breakthroughs for the industry.

However, Valve does not want to fall into the trap of pointless and iterative generational upgrades.

Why it matters: The current hardware already does a great job handling thousands of titles, so Valve does not like the idea of releasing a new handheld so soon.

Speaking to Reviews.org, Steam Deck designers Lawrence Yang and Yazan Aldehayyat discussed the console’s successors.

Lawrence Yang confirmed that Valve is not interested in yearly release cycles. The company intends to deliver a true generational leap for its next console, and it is currently moving forward with this goal at the forefront of development.

Valve also hopes to strike a balance between performance and efficiency.

We want to wait for a generational leap in compute without sacrificing battery life.

Previously, the gaming giant confirmed that its next handheld would not arrive before late 2025. With the original still going strong and the OLED model serving as an even more enticing purchase, the company is clearly in no rush to hurry up with the successor.

Nintendo is also expected to launch the Switch 2 next year. As such, Valve should be able to carefully study that hardware and the slew of other handhelds flooding the market as it continues to make steady progress on its next big portable console.

What are your thoughts on the Steam Deck successor? When do you think this console will arrive? Let’s discuss this in the comments and the official Tech4Gamers Forums.
