Ubisoft Heading Toward Another Disappointment?

Story Highlight
  • Star Wars Outlaws is the next big title from Ubisoft.
  • Recently, a gameplay demo was made available to the press, and the early previews have been mixed.
  • It has been said that Massive Entertainment’s take on the IP has nothing exciting to offer.

Ubisoft has released several titles this year, like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Skull & Bones, and XDefiant. While many have already become quite popular, Ubisoft is on its way to delivering another huge AAA release in just two months.

Star Wars Outlaws, announced a while ago and reported to be the most detailed game in the franchise, is the next major release from this publisher. This title has also received new previews recently, but the impressions have not been very positive.

Why it matters: Ubisoft has been recently criticized for its open-world formula, but the developer has been unable to move away from established tropes.

Following Summer Game Fest, Ubisoft provided another extensive look at the title, and a hands-on demo was made available for the press at the event.

Soon after the event, many previews of the game went live, but most of them have not been positive. One of the critics stated that Star Wars Outlaws has no standout feature beyond the fact that it’s a game in a huge franchise.

Another preview suggested that while playing Star Wars Outlaws was fun, it had nothing exciting. The title lacks impressive details, characters, visuals, innovation, and other things. One of the critics compared the title with Uncharted: Golden Abyss, released over a decade ago.

Many have also stated that Outlaws feels like the Star Wars equivalent of Uncharted, as the title is very similar to Sony’s first-party offerings. However, it seems to have been held back by Ubisoft’s open-world template.

While the early previews haven’t been very positive, it should be noted that critics only played a small demo without any context. According to the developers, Star Wars Outlaws has not been made playable to its fullest yet.

Therefore, the first impressions could be underselling Massive Entertainment’s work.

With interesting mechanics like a cop system and dogfights, there is still hope for Star Wars Outlaws. If nothing else, the game should appeal to die-hard fans of this IP who crave an exciting adventure in a galaxy far, far away.
