Story Highlight
  • After years of hearsay, the Sleeping Dogs movie is finally one step closer to being out on the screens.
  • A first draft of the movie’s script has been produced by the actor Simu Liu. It has likely been sent for review.
  • If any studio decides to back the film, casting and filming will finally start for the movie.

A Sleeping Dogs movie has been on the minds of many gamers ever since the title launched over a decade ago. Donnie Yen of Rogue One was working on a live-action adaptation in 2017, but the project fell through.

Earlier this year, Simu Liu of Shang-Chi took it upon himself to rejuvenate the IP by creating a new Sleeping Dogs movie. Now, the adaptation has reached one vital step closer to completion, as the first draft of its script has finally been completed.

Why it matters: After the 2017 Sleeping Dogs adaptation was announced to be dead earlier this year, Simu Liu took it upon himself to write and produce the film. Now, the new adaptation seems to be progressing smoothly.

Famous actor Simu Liu has created the first draft of the Sleeping Dogs movie script as its producer.

Simu Liu has confirmed on Twitter that a draft of the script is finished and already likely sent for review. Unfortunately, it’s still unclear who is directing and writing the script, as the name of the writer is blocked in the shared image.

When questioned about how the discussions went with Square Enix, Simu elaborates that the publisher has been understanding and cooperative. However, the studios still fail to understand the value of the Sleeping Dogs IP.

[Square Enix Is] absolutely great it’s the studios that don’t seem to understand how important this IP is BUT we will get them there.

If the script is approved without issues, the casting and filming will finally begin. However, the fate of the movie also depends on whether any studio decides to back it up, and Simu Liu’s wording suggests he’s facing difficulties in this process.
