7 of 8 Best-Selling Titles This Generation Are Single-Player Games

Story Highlight
  • Multiplayer games often overshadow single-player games in terms of popularity.
  • However, this generation’s single-player games have dominated the sales chart.
  • This proves that single-player games are still important amid the industry’s shift toward live service.

Single-player games always appeal to the masses, but many publishers believe this genre has become unsustainable. While the replayability and lucrative nature of multiplayer titles cannot be denied, statistics show that single-player offerings still dominate to this day.

These games often leave millions with memorable adventures, characters, and stories. For these reasons and more, single-player games have topped the best-selling charts this generation.

Why it matters: Publishers like Warner Bros recently stated that they would focus more on live-service projects in the future. However, these numbers show that such publishers are underestimating the appeal of a traditional solo game.

As reported by Rino, the top 8 best-sellers of this generation are nearly all single-player-driven experiences. Palworld is the only exception, and even in this instance, the game is not designed like most live-service titles.

Cyberpunk 2077 comes in first place, selling over 25 million units. Last year’s Hogwarts Legacy is the fastest-selling title on the list, racking up an impressive 24 million sales within the short span of one year.

These two are followed by the likes of Elden Ring, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and more. The list alone highlights the utter dominance of single-player games in the market today.

While publishers are not entirely wrong to fear the sustainability of this model, single-player games are doing better than ever. A high-quality single-player game is inherently more appealing since many are fatigued with live-service titles.

The constant inclusion of elements like Battle Passes and microtransactions in each live-service title has pushed audiences away. This genre is also limited in terms of creativity since giants like Call of Duty and Fortnite are so dominant, and new ideas can quickly fail.

On the other hand, single-player games allow developers the freedom to experiment with unique ideas. If a niche CRPG like Baldur’s Gate 3 can win Game of the Year, the sky is the limit for these types of titles.

Single-player games have also typically dominated Game of the Year conversations in the past, with the likes of The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and more being brought up during discussions about the best games of all time.

Single-player games were a joy to play last year, proving they are still incredible in many ways. While multiplayer titles have their place in the industry, there is little doubt that publishers should not rush toward this genre for the sake of more profits.
