Red Dead Redemption Requirements On PC Higher Than RDR2

Recommending RTX 2070 For Remaster of 14 Year Old Game!

Story Highlight
  • The Red Dead Redemption re-release asks for higher-end PC hardware than its successor.
  • The former recommends an RTX 2070, while the latter needs a GTX 1060 for solid results.
  • These specifications have raised concerns about poor optimization with this PC port.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is considered a benchmark for open-world games to this day. Thanks to its gorgeous visuals and detailed world, Rockstar’s latest release continues to stand out despite its age.

Perhaps the best part about the title is that it runs well across a range of PC configurations. However, it seems the same won’t be true for Red Dead Redemption Remastered since its requirements are more demanding than the sequel.

Why it matters: This title was originally released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2010. As such, many have been shocked at the requirements for a remaster of such an old game.

With Rockstar finally announcing the PC version, the minimum and recommended specifications for Red Dead Redemption Remastered have appeared on Steam.

Looking at the hardware mentioned, the minimum requirements are quite close, which is already concerning considering the technical gap between the two games. The upcoming remaster asks for a GTX 960, while Red Dead Redemption 2 recommends a GTX 770 for a playable experience.

However, things become more interesting when looking at the recommended specifications. While Rockstar’s latest release suggests 2016’s mid-range GTX 1060, the upcoming remaster recommends an RTX 2070 or Radeon RX 5700 XT.

Both GPUs are significantly more powerful than the GTX 1060, leaving PC gamers scratching their heads. The upcoming remaster brings a slew of graphical improvements to Red Dead Redemption, but the game still runs on an engine from 14 years ago.

This makes the specifications quite shocking. Fans have suggested that an RTX 2070 may be the recommendation for a 4K visual target in this instance, but the Steam requirements do not provide any further clarification.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar’s Latest Title Remains A Visual Feast Today

Elsewhere, the upcoming re-release recommends an SSD for the optimal experience. This is yet another requirement that was missing from Red Dead Redemption 2.

It is important to note that Red Dead Redemption Remastered runs at 60FPS on the PS5. An RTX 2070 is not too far off from the base PS5’s GPU, but the requirements have led to suspicions of an unoptimized PC release.

There has certainly been no shortage of such ports, so fans hope that Rockstar’s more demanding than anticipated PC specifications are just a small oversight instead of a major red flag.
