PS VR2 Sold Out On Amazon; Sales Skyrocket By 2000% After $200 Discount

Amazon's 2nd Best-Selling VR Hardware!

Story Highlights
  • Following a $200 discount, PS VR2 has managed to record a 2000% boost in sales after struggling in the market.
  • It sold more units on Sunday alone than in the entire last 7 months.
  • The headset has climbed up to Amazon’s list of best-selling VR hardware and is now sold out.

It is no mystery that PS VR2 wasn’t doing well in the market. However, things have drastically changed as PlayStation’s VR headset has managed to record huge numbers in just one day, with sales increasing by up to 2000%.

Why it matters: Back in June, it was reported that Sony wanted to abandon the VR market because its latest venture wasn’t much of a success. However, this comeback could be the beginning of greater things for this headset.

PS VR2 launched at an incredibly high price of $550. Because it wasn’t a standalone headset and needed a PS5 to work, the whole package was effectively priced at around $1000. This wasn’t a very good deal for the fans and led to low sales.

However, since the launch, there have been two significant changes. One of them is the upcoming Steam support for PC compatibility. The other is the $200 price cut that is now available through multiple retailers in the US.

According to data obtained through ResetEra, PS VR2 sold more units on Sunday than in the last seven months. The headset launched in February 2023, and Sony reported selling 600K units in the first six months.

Over on Amazon, the headset is no longer available to buy. It is also right behind the Meta Quest 3 as the 2nd best-selling gaming VR device on the platform right now. This indicates that the market is open to buying Sony’s VR hardware. However, the price was just too high for the longest time.

Sony seems to be on the cusp of great things in the VR market.

While the PS VR2 is still missing flagship titles, PC support should somewhat alleviate this problem. The PC platform already features a number of big games that are compatible with VR technology.

It remains to be seen if Sony intends to make this a permanent price cut. However, if this ends up being the case, the PS VR2 might end up finding redemption this year despite its rocky launch.
