AI Upscaling Has Huge Role In PS5 Pro!

Story Highlights
  • Sources suggest that the PS5 Pro will boast 4K 120FPS capabilities.
  • It will rely heavily on Sony’s AI upscaling tech and ray tracing.
  • The Pro console will reportedly be released before GTA 6.

As the launch of PS5 Pro approaches, we are seeing more and more information on Sony’s brand-new iteration. A new report has emerged claiming that the PS5 Pro will be marketed as a 4K 120FPS console.

Why it matters: The current-generation consoles struggle to run games like Final Fantasy 16 without compromising on frame rate or resolution. Therefore, the PS5 Pro can be very valuable for those seeking a high-end experience.

Confirming the previous reports, NXgamer’s Michael, talking to Moore’s Law is Dead, has revealed that AI upscaling will be a massive part of the PS5 Pro. The feature had been in the works for a while to make the console compatible with 4K gaming at higher frame rates.

According to Michael, the console will build upon what the PS5 already offers. This hardware includes a 40FPS mode with VRR support in multiple games. The Pro will likely go a step further and offer such options at 4K.

While not native, Sony’s AI-based upscaling will offer close to native results at this resolution. Meanwhile, ray tracing will be another key focus, with Sony possibly offering 2x better ray tracing.

Michael even anticipated that GTA 6 could come with the 40FPS VRR option on the PS5 Pro.

A 4K 120FPS marketing target is not brand new to PlayStation. Sony already advertised the base console with this target, though it rarely achieved 4K 60FPS.

Therefore, even for the Pro console, such a target might be too ambitious. However, with Sony’s upscaling being the wildcard, nothing can be completely ruled out.

The source also clarifies that improving performance won’t be much of a challenge for developers. Most effort will go into implementing the AI upscaling.

Reports suggest that Sony is targeting a late 2024 release window to ensure that the Pro console is ready for GTA 6 next year, possibly positioning it as the only place to play the game at higher than 30FPS.
