Palworld Player Count Already Down By 97% on Steam

Will Palworld Fade Into Obscurity?

Story Highlights
  • Palworld has lost about 97% of its player base, with almost 60K concurrent players right now.
  • The game’s player count has dropped quite fast for how big it was at release.
  • The title was a major success at launch and is Steam’s second-biggest game ever in terms of concurrent players.

Palworld launched on January 19 to a massive reception from the audience.

It was a major hit with over 370K concurrent players when it was released. While it seemed like the player base would never go down, nearly three months later, Palword has lost 97% of players on Steam.

Why it matters: Palworld showed huge promise and reminded Pokemon fans what they were missing out on by integrating fun elements and engaging gameplay that attracted a lot of players.

Typically, games are expected to lose players as they get older.

However, recent examples like Helldivers and last year’s Baldur’s Gate 3 showed that a few exceptions continue to attract hundreds of thousands of players late into their lifespans.

For instance, the former launched not too long after Palworld. Today, Helldivers 2 is still among Steam’s best-selling games and records average daily concurrent peaks of over 250K players.

This hints that Palworld has lost more players than it should have. The average concurrent peaks have steadily declined since launch, with the game recording a concurrent peak this low for the first time today.

Still, Palworld has thousands playing at any given moment, and this is by no means a terrible number of players. The game still holds the record for Steam’s second-highest concurrent peak.

It is expected to maintain this record for years to come, and there is hope for a revival once the studio starts launching new content.

Future plans for Palworld include the addition of PvP, a release on more platforms, and more. All of these combined could bring the game back to popularity, even if it fails to rise among Steam’s charts again.

Despite the declining player counts, Palworld is not to be taken lightly. No game could accomplish the highs it saw in 2024, so the title deserves a lot of credit. The fact that it came from an indie studio made these accomplishments even more meaningful.
