Just a few months away from Switch 2’s launch, the original Nintendo Switch is still going strong. Nintendo has just published its earnings release for the past year, revealing a massive milestone for the Switch.

The Nintendo Switch has officially sold 150.68 million units in just eight years of its release. It is just 10 million units shy of becoming the highest-selling console and dethroning the PS2, which has sold over 160 million units.

Why it matters: It’s a massive achievement for a handheld console to sell this much in just 8 years. The Nintendo Switch is one of the biggest successes in gaming history, and it’s exciting to see it break more records.

A staggering 4.82 million Switch hardware units were sold in the three months ending December last year. Thus, the holidays seemed quite profitable for Nintendo.

While the Switch currently ranks third among the highest-selling consoles, the second spot is also secured by another Nintendo console, the DS, which has sold 154.02 million units.

Moreover, the earnings call also revealed software sales for the handheld console, which stood at a whopping 1.3598 billion units. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is now the highest-selling game for the Switch, with 67.35 million copies sold to date.
