Sure Custom Keyboards Are Cool But My K95 Platinum Is Still Going Strong

Is It Worth The Extra Cost Or Should You Look Elsewhere?

Story Highlight
  • The Corsair K95 Platinum offers an incredible typing experience with its gold contact Cherry MX switches and a 1.2mm actuation distance for an instant response time with a crisp sound.
  • With its three onboard memory profiles, the keyboard offers decent customization capabilities, allowing users to change RGB modes and have a set of different macros as needed.
  • Perhaps the main highlight of the keyboard, its six dedicated macro keys, make the K95 Platinum perfect for video editors, graphic designers, and content writers.
  • The volume slider requires improvements and it stops working occasionally. Moreover, the keyboard isn’t recommended if you don’t have use for its macro keys as it’s too long.

When it comes to keyboards, I have always loved the idea of building a custom keyboard. However, my Corsair K95 Platinum is still going strong after over a year’s use. This keyboard has proven its worth time and again, making it a go-to recommendation for me. From its decent response time, three onboard memory profiles, and a clear sound, there’s not much to dislike about the keyboard.

A Typing Experience Like No Other

For me, typing experience matters more than most things a keyboard has to offer. The K95 Platinum is hard to beat in that area. To explain, the gold contact Cherry MX switches allow me to type quickly and accurately, letting me go above 120WPM easily. Additionally, the keyboard’s weight lets me put as much force as I require to type without fear of damaging any of the keys.

Moreover, the satisfying tactile feedback makes typing long articles a joy. Also, while playing games, the keys always respond with a crisp, consistent feel, that never fails to impress me.

Top-Notch Response Time

When it comes to competitive gaming, every millisecond counts, and the K95 Platinum hasn’t disappointed me once with its outstanding response time. The 1.2mm actuation distance ensures all of my keystrokes register instantly, giving me an edge in fast-paced games like League Of Legends.

Other than improving my typing accuracy and overall speed, I can’t compromise the level of responsiveness the K95 Platinum offers.

Diversity With Onboard Memory Profiles

Another aspect I love about the Corsair K95 Platinum keyboard is its three onboard memory profiles thanks to its 8MB storage. That means I can customize my keyboard however I please and change its profile with the click of a single button.

Depending on my use case scenario, I have two different profiles for when I’m working, or playing games, while the third is the default profile for when I’m browsing or practicing my typing. The customization includes changing the RGB lighting, different macros on the G1 to G6 keys, and changing the display, so you have a lot to play around with.

Making Work Easier With The Macro Keys

An impressive feature of the K95 Platinum is its six macro keys attached at the left side, increasing the keyboard’s overall length. While macros are illegal in most games, many games like Guild Wars 2 benefit from these shortcuts as long as you’re not getting an unfair advantage.

I have set up my G1 to G6 macros mainly for work purposes; with my G1 being a shortcut for Ctrl + A, G2 for Ctrl + B, G3 for Ctrl + C, and G5 and G6 for my most-used WordPress codes. These shortcuts improve my productivity immensely.

On the one hand, I love the keyboard’s features, but on the other hand, I don’t recommend buying the K95 Platinum if you’re not going to use its six macro keys daily because it’s an extremely long keyboard.

If you want something with similar performance without the macro keys, I recommend buying the Corsair K70 Core RGB. Not only is it more affordable, but it also provides a similar feel and touch to the K95 Platinum.

Issues With The Volume Slider

Although the keyboard is outstanding and competes with many others within the same price range, I dislike its volume slider for multiple reasons. For starters, the slider doesn’t have a good feel to it. Moreover, after a year’s usage, my volume slider has already stopped working.

No matter how much I move the slider, the volume’s level only changes by one or two points. So, if you’re excited to use a volume slider, the Corsair K95 Platinum may not be an ideal keyboard. However, it’s a minor issue that is far outweighed by the keyboard’s incredible strengths.

Other Features And Issues

The main reason why my Corsair K95 Platinum is still going strong is because of its countless features. Here are a few more features and some issues I must address:

  • The keyboard comes with a USB pass-through, meaning, that it has two cables. If you want to connect your headphones directly to the keyboard, you will have to connect both cables of the keyboard to your PC.
  • The aluminum frame gives the keyboard a light yet robust feel to it.
  • The K95 Platinum comes with a magnetic wristrest with two grips. Flip the wristrest upside down to use the grip that you’re most comfortable with.
  • Although the USB pass-through is a nice feature, the space given at the keyboard’s base is too narrow for many headphone cables to pass through, making it annoying to manage the cables.

Why The K95 Platinum Is Still My Go-To

Despite the rising popularity of custom keyboards, my Corsair K95 Platinum is still going strong because of its excellent build quality, impressive response times, decent macro keys, crisp sound, and other additional features.

While it might be an expensive mechanical keyboard, if you have the required use case for it, you won’t want to shift to another keyboard for quite a while.
