The Last of Us, with its 20 million copies sold, is one of the most popular PlayStation exclusives of all time. The game’s events display a post-apocalyptic world, where most people have turned into zombies, and you have to survive through the world. According to most fans, the protagonists, Joel and Ellie, are loved by all, and the story is so heart-touching that it permanently books a place in your heart. 

Originally a PlayStation 3 game, The Last of Us was remastered for the PlayStation 4. In 2020, a sequel was launched titled The Last of Us 2. When the game was released, speculations started that the game would have a multiplayer mode. It was even announced by Naughty Dog, the studio behind the game, that they were developing a multiplayer mode. However, the claim was negated in an official statement:

‘We have made a difficult choice not to include an online multiplayer mode in The Last of Us part 2 after the scope and ambition of the game’s single-player campaign reached a level even the team had not anticipated’. (Naughty Dog)

Consequently, fans were disappointed as the concept of a multiplayer mode for the game seemed to be a cool idea, and it was anticipated that it would be like a battle royale mode, but Naughty Dog had other ideas.

Having said that, Naughty Dog might have reformed the idea of multiplayer. An insider of the industry and a reliable leaker Oops Leaks, tweeted that Naughty Dog might indeed are working on a multiplayer for TLOU 2. Although, according to him, they have refrained from the idea of the multiplayer mode being a battle royale. Instead, the idea will be rebooted entirely and implemented differently.

He also went on to say that an upcoming game by the name of The Day Before is launching, and it might be a sneak peek as to what we can expect from The Last of Us multiplayer mode. He also commented about a possible sequel to The Last of Us 2, stating that the script is ready, but the game’s development has not yet begun, and Naughty Dog is currently recruiting a team for that. 

Lastly, all this news should be taken with a grain of salt because Naughty Dog themselves has no official statement. They have a pretty good reputation for announcing the anticipations and theories of fans. So, we have to wait and see if they announce it in the future. But, for sure, it isn’t being released any time soon, even if the multiplayer mode is in production. So is the case with The Last of Us 3, of which the production hasn’t even been started yet. We are really excited to see what Naughty Dog has to offer as a multiplayer mode if it’s not battle royale, and we will keep an eye out for any further leaks or announcements.
