Is This A Good Time To Purchase Ryzen 5000?

Expert Verified By

Still worth purchasing in 2024?

Story Highlight
  • Despite their age, Ryzen 5000 CPUs keep up fairly well in modern titles.
  • The newer 3D-V Cache variants of the Ryzen 5000 CPUs provide a significant performance uplift over the original CPUs, making them viable even in 2024.
  • The AM4 platform has become relatively affordable over the past years, making it suitable for new PC builders working on a tighter budget.
  • If your budget allows, then opting for a 7000-series CPU is still recommended, especially considering the longevity AMD promises out of the AM5 platform.

AMD recently announced two new additions to their 5000 series of CPUs, which further increased the lifespan of AM4 CPUs. However, with the guaranteed support for the AM5 platform till 2027, does it actually make sense to purchase a Ryzen 5000 series processor?

Solid Price To Performance

When it comes to price-to-performance, the Ryzen 5000 series even has the cheapest newer generation processors beat. Not only do you get incredible versatility in motherboard options thanks to the AM4 platform, but you’ll also be working with more affordable DDR4 memory, saving you a lot of money.

Combine that with the discounted price tag of 5000 series CPUs, and you’ll essentially be guaranteed excellent value out of these chips. It’s not like you’ll be completely left without an upgrade path once you upgrade to these CPUs either. After all, AMD recently extended support for the AM4 platform, providing it with two new processors.

These newer entries can very well make for suitable upgrades for those working with an entry-level 5000 chip such as the Ryzen 5 5600X.

Performance Uplift With 3D-V Cache

Speaking about performance compared to modern alternatives, AMD’s much more recent 3D-V Cache variants of the 5000 series actually hold up a lot better than the original CPUs. In fact, most 3D-V Cache variants aren’t even too old at this point, with the most recent one being released at the start of 2024.

These processors provide a significant performance uplift over their non-3D-V Cache variants, making them fantastic upgrades for someone already on the AM4 platform. Benchmarks from Hardware unboxed further highlight this, with each processor providing a performance uplift of at least 23 percent.

In addition to that, the fastest among these 3D-V Cache CPUs, The Ryzen 7 5800X3D, delivers comparable performance to the much more recent Ryzen 5 7600X. Of course, it mostly falls short of the higher-end Zen 4 processors, which is almost a given.

That is not to say that the performance on any of these CPUs is lacking. In fact, these CPUs will handle pretty much anything you throw at them. Both, the 5700X3D and the 5800X3D even make for adequate pairs with high-end GPUs such as the RTX 4080, and the 4090.

Suitable Upgrades For AM4 Users

If you are already on the AM4 platform, upgrading to the 5000 series is still a very viable option for you. As I showed previously, both the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and 5700X3D provide remarkable performance for their price, and still keep up with modern processors.

CPUs on the more budget side of the spectrum, such as the Ryzen 5 5600X and the 5700X also pair well with similarly priced GPUs, making them a solid value proposition even in the current market.

Having said that, if you intend on building a system from scratch, I would recommend stretching your budget just a little bit to opt for the Ryzen 7000 series CPUs. Not only will you get a much more future-proof system, but the performance hike also justifies the higher overall price.
