Ninja Theory Skipped 60FPS For Cinematic Experience!

Story Highlight
  • Ninja Theory has confirmed a 30FPS cap for Hellblade 2 on consoles.
  • The game will not feature other graphical modes, making it limited to 30FPS.
  • The developers believe this frame rate will make the experience more cinematic.

Ninja Theory has confirmed heaps of positive information about Hellblade 2. The team’s focus on cinematic qualities has been a major theme across recent previews, with the developers touting their technical expertise.

While the game was seemingly doing everything right, one small detail could be a major problem for its ambitions. Ninja Theory has confirmed a 30FPS lock for the game on Xbox Series S|X.

Why it matters: This could be an instant deal breaker for many who believe 60FPS gameplay is necessary on consoles moving forward.

Hellblade 2’s Visuals Come At A Cost

Following recent previews, GamePro interviewed the Hellblade 2 VFX director. According to the statement, Hellblade 2 aims for a cinematic experience, so the game runs at a consistent 30FPS.

No additional graphics modes are included, and both consoles utilize dynamic resolution.

The experience should feel more cinematic.

Unfortunately, this is the second big Xbox first-party release to follow the trend. Last year’s Starfield was limited to the same frame rate, and while Hellblade 2 looks much more ambitious in terms of visuals, the revelation is just as disappointing.

Ninja Theory has spurred the age-old cinematic frame rate debate. This was a common talking point last generation when consoles could not aim for this frame rate. However, with 60FPS becoming the norm, we find it shocking that it was left out.

If nothing else, the Xbox Series X should have included an optional 60FPS mode. Meanwhile, PlayStation has consistently offered 60FPS gameplay for a majority of its first-party titles.

The World’s Most Powerful Console Has Not Lived Up To Its Potential

At the very least, Hellblade 2’s slower nature should make 30FPS more bearable. The game still looks quite promising in every other area.

Recent previews set the stage for exciting levels of immersion. Ninja Theory states that the game is like an indie movie, with elements like HUD and camera cuts eliminated for a cinematic experience.

Hellblade 2 launches next month on consoles and PC. However, those looking to enjoy the game in all its 60FPS glory might have to consider the latter since the console versions appear to be set in stone already.
