It Seems Like Xbox Truly Believes In Generative AI To Be The Future Of Game Development!

Story Highlight
  • Halo Studios is making Generative AI a core pillar of development for Halo games.
  • Earlier, it was also reported that Xbox has made AI workflows mandatory for all employees.
  • This puts the future of Halo games in jeopardy as it poses a threat to a huge public backlash and risk of poor development since AI can’t replace creativity.

The Halo franchise is set to see new beginnings soon, as Xbox revamped the entire development team behind the iconic FPS series. The newly formed Halo Studios is now leading development on two new titles that are well into their development.

However, this reset button might not be what long-term fans had expected. As spotted by the reliable Rebs Gaming, Halo Studios is now leveraging Generative AI as a major pillar for the development of Halo games.

Why it matters: The use of Generative AI has been highly controversial in the gaming industry, and such an adoption has only been rebelled against.

For starters, Halo Studios recently appointed a new Chief of Staff, Angela Hession, who runs her own AI consultancy that helps integrate AI strategies across gaming, tech, and commerce companies.

Before this role, she had been a Microsoft employee for over a decade, working as a Global Head of Gaming Safety and Trust. Her experience in AI seems to be a major reason why she was hired for this position.

Interestingly, earlier reports also suggested that Xbox has made AI workflows mandatory for all of its employees after the huge wave of layoffs earlier this year.

That isn’t all, though. Other Halo Studios employees, e.g, the engineering/operations director, are also using AI-driven automation to accelerate development at the studio.

As for the evidence that the studio is using Generative AI, a bunch of manager-level employees at the studio recently acquired certifications in Generative AI for language models, project management, and more.

The gaming community is also critical of this approach, claiming it sucks all the creativity out of these projects, and it seems that Xbox is digging its own grave in this pursuit.

One report even reveals that 63% gamers are against the usage of Generative AI in video games.

Regarding the current development status of Halo games, earlier reports indicated leadership problems at the studio. The staff isn’t happy with the slate of upcoming projects either, which makes sense considering the direction they’re headed in.
