Fingers Crossed Future Halo Games Use UE5 Better!

Story Highlight
  • Halo Campaign Evolved is said to have faced development trouble tied to its shift to Unreal Engine.
  • A new report also points to outsourcing and production pipeline issues during development.
  • Adding to these issues, the first Halo remake hasn’t been too big a hit so far.

Halo Campaign Evolved has been out for a few days now, and the game hasn’t been an enormous success. For context, the remake is rated much lower than the original Halo Combat Evolved, and it hasn’t been able to capture the PlayStation audience.

Many have also criticized the title for its technical problems, and a new report may explain why this is the case.

Why it matters: The Halo franchise has practically been a core pillar of the Xbox brand since its inception, but the series has been unable to find its footing over the last decade or so.

According to a report from Rebs Gaming, Halo Campaign Evolved’s development was affected by the studio’s migration to Unreal Engine, alongside outsourcing-related complications and broader production challenges.

As described in the video, the shift from the Blame Engine to Unreal Engine 5 meant that developers were forced to rebuild assets for Unreal Engine 5. Halo Studios worked alongside developer Abstraction, the team responsible for much of Halo Campaign Evolved’s technical development.

It is said that this team also had to spend plenty of time understanding the Blam engine during the porting process. Elsewhere, the report points to struggles with external partners and production standards.

It is said that an external partner failed to live up to expectations with the game’s cinematics, leading to the decision to cut real-time cutscenes.

Halo Campaign Evolved
Halo Campaign Evolved has failed to sell as well as the more established older titles in the franchise.

Ultimately, Halo Campaign Evolved was just good enough in time for its release, but the game’s production was marred by a number of challenges. Fans can only hope that Halo Studios learns from these setbacks and ensures a more technically sound release for the rumored Halo 2 remake.
