The God of War franchise is nearly two decades old and continues to be among the most popular and beloved franchises for PlayStation.
The recently released God of War Ragnarok has already become a huge hit, selling over 5 million copies in the very first week of its release and winning the PlayStation blog’s Game of The Year award.
However, its predecessor was equally impressive, as it revitalized the franchise with a new setting, different gameplay, and a brand new take on the God of War franchise. God of War was announced in 2016 and released in 2018, exactly five years ago.
Though the game is already five years old, the narrative and excellent visuals hold up extremely well to this day.
God of War continued the story of Kratos, picking up a long time after the events of God of War 3. The game introduced a very different version of Kratos, and fans immediately grew to enjoy the new take on his character.
In terms of combat, Sony Santa Monica also introduced the Leviathan Axe. Since then, the Leviathan Axe has become an iconic weapon in the franchise, with abilities like the popular axe throw and callback mechanic.
God of War also received excellent reception from critics and went on to win the Game of The Year award at TGA 2018, beating games like Red Dead Redemption 2.
Recently it was also revealed that God of War achieved $500M in revenue and sold over 25 million copies worldwide. The game was also ported to PC and saw similar love from PC gamers.
For those looking to try God of War, it can frequently be found at a low price when the game goes on sale on PS4 and PS5 consoles. PS5 owners can also enjoy the game at a high resolution and 60 FPS.
