Hidetaka Miyazaki's Best Work Is Yet To Come!

Story Highlight
  • FromSoftware says Elden Ring didn’t achieve the team’s ideal vision for an RPG.
  • Hidetaka Miyazaki already has ideas for achieving this goal in the next game.
  • FromSoftware is also gearing up to launch Shadow of the Erdtree next week.

FromSoftware nearly perfected its open-world formula with Elden Ring and took home Game of The Year as a result. Nearly three years after this launch, the studio is getting ready to launch Shadow of the Erdtree.

Ahead of this expansion, the team has discussed various elements of its history and game development journey. One interesting statement came from Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, who states that FromSoftware’s ideal RPG hasn’t been made yet.

Why it matters: While FromSoftware’s latest release was a major deal, it had a lot of room for improvement. The bar for RPGs is also higher than ever, thanks to releases like Baldur’s Gate 3.

Director Hidetaka Miyazaki reflected on Elden Ring as FromSoftware approaches what is said to be the final chapter of this game. Speaking to PCGamer, he described that Elden Ring got close to his vision of the ideal RPG but wasn’t quite there.

When he was asked about this ideal vision, the Director refused to share information in an attempt to keep his next project under wraps. Still, he hinted that his next game would be an even bigger deal than Elden Ring.

“It’s hard to say without giving spoilers for my next ideas or our next games.”

The Director finds exploration and piecing together expansive maps the most exciting. Therefore, this may be a hint at where FromSoftware will go next.

Elden Ring was already praised for excelling in this department. Since the title barely had any hand-holding or markers, players were left to explore The Lands Between on their own terms.

This led to a magical experience, one that differed from person to person based on the choices they made during navigation. Perhaps FromSoftware’s next game will lean into these elements even more.

Shadow of the Erdtree Will Be More Challenging Than The Base Game

While FromSoftware’s plans and ambitions could eventually manifest into the industry’s biggest RPG, the team is currently focused on launching Shadow of the Erdtree.

Set to offer 30-40 more hours of challenging gameplay, this expansion could be Elden Ring’s last hurrah. The studio is going all-in and making sure it ends up being worthy as a DLC release for such an iconic title.
