First Ever Thunderbolt 5 Cable Now Available; Boasts 120Gbps Bandwidth

Thunderbolt 5 Is Here But Not Quite Useful Yet!

Story Highlight
  • The world’s first Thunderbolt 5 cable is already being sold online.
  • It costs about $23 and promises up to 120Gbps bandwidth.
  • While the cable is up for sale, products that support the Thunderbolt 5 standard are expected to arrive later this year.

It’s been a year since the announcement of Thunderbolt 5, and we finally have the first cable that supports this standard on Amazon. It offers a specification of 120Gbps of raw video bandwidth.

Why it matters: Intel invented the Thunderbolt technology, making this breakthrough quite significant for the company.

Rumour has it that the upcoming Intel Arrow Lake processors will be the first to include support for this connectivity. The processors are scheduled to arrive in Q3 2024 at some point.

Because of this connectivity, there will be “one cable to rule them all,” and it’s clear why. It can power high-performance laptops, support display resolutions up to 10K, and features a massive data transfer rate. Essentially, a single wire may perform all tasks.

This cable, advertised for one meter, costs $23. Unlike Apple’s offering, it is quite expensive, but the cost is more than justified. For the time being, this will be the longest cable available for purchase.

This cable is said to be sturdy and dependable. It can handle a maximum power output of 240W. Thunderbolt 5 also enables you to connect three 4K screens at 144Hz or two 8K displays at a 60Hz refresh rate.

For a single screen, the cable can produce a resolution of up to 10K. For a more realistic 4K output, the Thunderbolt 5 standard is ready to support 540Hz output on a single screen.

Although the cable is already available, compatible products with this connectivity will launch at the end of the year, most likely extending into 2025. That’s when the technology will truly shine on its own.
