- A new analysis revealed that Final Fantasy 16 on PS5 has better image quality than on Xbox Series X.
- In quality mode, the former offers 28% better image quality, and in performance mode, there is a 55% difference.
- This shows that Square Enix released an unoptimised port on the Xbox consoles.
Final Fantasy 16 was initially launched as a PlayStation exclusive, which significantly impacted the game’s sales. The developers have revealed on multiple occasions that the game underperformed mainly because of the deal with the PlayStation, which makes sense given that a single platform alone can’t account for millions of sales.
The game was released on PC last year and finally arrived on Xbox on June 8. However, it seems the developer didn’t put in much effort on the port and simply released an unpolished one. Due to that, Final Fantasy 16 on PS5 has much better image quality than on the Xbox Series X.
Why it matters: The developers had enough time to release a polished version on both the PC and Xbox, but didn’t do so, which will again hurt the game’s sales.
RGamerB_ on Twitter revealed the difference in the Final Fantasy 16 image quality on Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. The quality mode on the PS5 offers 3,686,400 pixels, while the Xbox Series X offers 2,663,424 pixels. This means that on the former, there is a 28% advantage in image quality.
The performance mode on the PS5 offers 2,073,600 pixels, while the Xbox Series X offers only 921,600 pixels, resulting in a 55% image quality advantage for the PlayStation 5, which is simply not acceptable.
The platform isn’t to blame here, as the Series X has been proven to feature significantly better hardware.
Square Enix didn’t even optimise the title for the PC, as players didn’t think it was worth buying after playing the demo. The game did improve, but it was still far from ideal.
It is also worth noting that the game’s performance on PlayStation 5 at release was also abysmal. It was also overheating many PS5s, and the combat area was eating frames like they were nothing.
So, the significant difference in image quality between the Series X and PS5 isn’t the fault of the platform, but rather the developer.
What do you think about the PS5 offering up to 55% better image quality than the Xbox Series X in Final Fantasy 16? Do you think it is fair for the developer to release such a port?
