Shadow of The Erdtree For The GOTY Award?

Story Highlight
  • Expansions and Remakes can now win in all nominated categories at The Game Awards.
  • This means releases like Silent Hill 2 and Shadow of the Erdtree can win the GOTY award.
  • This is a policy change from the previous editions where DLCs weren’t nominated.

The Game Awards are closer than ever and Geoff Keighley has dropped a new update for this year’s nominees eligibility criteria. For the first time, even expansions and DLCs can win all the categories even the Game of The Year award.

Why it matters: In the earlier awards, DLCs couldn’t win the award even if they launched after a considerable time since the launch of the base game. But this year, it leaves the doors wide open for Shadow of The Erdtree to snag the GOTY.

DLCs can now win in all categories at The Game Awards

Even last, Resident Evil 4 Remake was nominated for the GOTY award. And now, all remasters, remakes, expansions, and DLCs can win their given categories. So, games like Silent Hill 2, and DLCs like Elden Ring’s now have a solid chance.

Expansion packs, new game seasons, DLCs, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories, if the jury deems the new creative and technical work to be worthy of a nomination

However, fans don’t seem too thrilled about the prospect of Edlen Ring winning another GOTY award for its DLC. But, when it was released many people believed it should qualify for the award.

Moreover, the FAQ page on The Game Award’s site shows the voting criteria for the event too. According to it, 90% of the voting is done by the Jury and the rest 10% is public. The voting closes on December 11 for the general public.

Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see what goes down at the event. There have been some solid releases this year that do have a solid chance of winning the prestigious award. These include Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Black Myth: Wukong, and more.
