Choices & Consequences Will Be Key Theme!

Story Highlight
  • The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is borrowing key elements from Phantom Liberty.
  • The director says the sequel will have more choices and consequences, allowing you to drive the story to your liking.
  • He states that choices lead to the pinnacle of RPGs.

CDPR has gained a new following after the success of Cyberpunk 2077 and the Phantom Liberty expansion, so the fans are now keenly interested in their next projects.

While CDPR has already said that the sequel is early in development, the team has given some more insights into the project. According to the director, the sequel will be more like Phantom Liberty, which has a focus on reactivity, choices, and consequences.

Why it matters: The element of choice adds more replay value to RPGs. This focus also makes the genre distinct since players can shape their playthroughs in different ways.

Phantom Liberty Will Become The Template For Cyberpunk 2077 Sequels

During an interview with Aftermath, Pawel Sasko, the associate director of the next Cyberpunk game, gave some details about the sequel.

I’m a fan of having choices and consequences.

He said that the sequel would preserve all the DNA of the original game. However, it will go a step ahead of the original in terms of reactivity, as the sequel will have more choices and consequences.

Cyberpunk 2077 stumbled in this regard. Although it featured multiple endings, Phantom Liberty was a better spin on this concept, with the associate director describing a major split in the DLC’s narrative during the mid-section.

This type of format was already used in the The Witcher 2 and Blood and Wine. Pawel Sasko hopes to return to this form of storytelling in the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel since he states that reactivity is the pinnacle of RPGs.

Furthermore, the director wants the sequel to give players all the freedom they want. Since any RPG is about the player’s experience, he wants them to shape their story without invalidating any particular decisions.

Pawel Sasko raises a solid point.

Last year’s industry-sweeping CRPG, Baldur’s Gate 3, was considered a big hit due to all the alternate routes the narrative could go. With this goal in mind, CDPR could head in a similar direction for the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel.
