Cyberpunk 2077 To Receive Nvidia Path Tracing Update On 11th April

The Cyberpunk 2077 for CD Project Red will finally get an update for Nvidia’s new Path Tracing technology. Nvidia Path Tracing update for the game will arrive next month, confirmed at the Game Developer Conference 2023.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be the fourth title to get the new Nvidia Path Tracing technology after Quake, Portal, and Minecraft. According to Nvidia, its path-tracing technology will revolutionize how games are developed. With the help of technologies like Nvidia DLSS 3 AI upscaling and path tracing, developers can now access tools that make future games look indistinguishable from reality.

Pawel Kozlowski, a senior technology developer engineer at NVIDIA, said,

“This not only gives better visuals to the players but also has the promise to revolutionize the entire pipeline of how games are being created.”

The Nvidia path tracing update for Cyberpunk 2077 will come in the form of a new graphical preset called Ray Tracing Overdrive.

Nvidia path tracing will improve all the RTX features, including Nvidia Ray Traced Direct Illumination, Nvidia Ray Traced Indirect Lighting, and Nvidia Ray Traced Reflections, giving the game a more realistic look by offering more nature-colored lighting and correct shadows. At the same time, the reflections in the game will now also be rendered at full resolution.

With Cyberpunk 2077 getting such massive support and will probably be the blockbuster title to showcase Nvidia’s path-tracing technology, the company also expects the future game to move in the same direction.

The technology is very demanding and only limited to Nvidia GeForce RTX 2000, 3000, and 4000 series. AMD has also been working its way up, though it’s still not as good when getting acceptable performance in RTX titles.

What are your thoughts on the new path-tracing technology from Nvidia, is ray tracing worth the cost of the hit to performance?
