Xbox Game At The Top of PlayStation's Charts!

Story Highlights

  • Call of Duty made it to the top 3 most popular PlayStation games in 2023.
  • No PlayStation exclusive managed to make the list.
  • Other notable names from the list include Fortnite, Fifa 23, and GTA 5.

PlayStation has just released a list revealing the most played games in 2023 according to different regions.

While multiple names make the list, one recurring title is Call of Duty. The list is based on the number of hours played, and Call of Duty seems to dominate despite the rocky launch of Modern Warfare 3.

Why it matters: Modern Warfare 3 became the worst-reviewed entry of the IP last year after a short campaign and reused multiplayer elements disappointed audiences worldwide.

When comparing the hours spent on these games, Call of Duty has managed to stay in the top 3 spots in multiple countries.

These notably include major parts of Europe, America, Canada, and the UK. The only exceptions are Japan and most Middle Eastern countries. In Japan, Genshin Impact is the more popular title.

It should be noted that PlayStation mentions Call of Duty instead of a particular entry. Therefore, this result includes numbers from the free-to-play Warzone 2.0 and last year’s record-breaking Modern Warfare 2.

Three other titles widely mentioned in the list are Fifa 23, GTA 5, and Fortnite. None of these entries are surprising, with GTA 5 selling 190 million units, Fifa dominating every year, and Fortnite being among the biggest battle royales.

Interestingly, no PlayStation title shows up on the list. While disappointing, this is not surprising since single-player games cannot match the retention of multiplayer or live-service titles.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3

Final Fantasy 16 and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 were the two biggest PS5 exclusives this year, and neither of them had multiplayer or online components. So, while PlayStation is crushing it with the market share in terms of console sales, the overall player engagement leaves much to be desired.

Following the Activision Blizzard merger, one of the most played games on PlayStation is owned by Xbox.

Sony has a few multiplayer titles of its own releasing next year, hoping for better audience engagement. These include the likes of Helldivers 2, Foamstars, and more content for Destiny 2.
