AMD Considering Phasing Out 8 GB Variants For Its Mid-Range 9000 Series

Expert Verified By

8 GB variants might become a thing of the past.

Story Highlight
  • NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 Ti 8GB faced backlash due to its insufficient VRAM, resulting in performance issues in modern, demanding games.
  • AMD may discontinue its RX 9060 XT 8GB to avoid similar criticism, as it recognizes that 8GB of VRAM is no longer sufficient for many gamers.
  • AMD is likely to shift 8GB of VRAM to lower-end models, such as the RX 9050 XT.

Given the poor reception of NVIDIA’s RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, AMD may consider discontinuing its RX 9060 XT 8GB. NVIDIA’s 8GB GPU has drawn criticism for having insufficient VRAM, which has led to performance issues in some of the more demanding games available today.

Why it matters: AMD’s decision to phase out 8 GB cards highlights how game requirements are evolving, and that manufacturers like AMD must adapt or risk falling behind.

AMD is considering discontinuing the RX 9060 XT 8 GB before it’s too late, as it doesn’t want to make the same mistake twice. Although the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB was intended to be a good mid-range card, gamers have been experiencing difficulties because of its limited VRAM.

Some of the latest games are too demanding for their 8GB of VRAM, particularly when using high textures or playing at higher resolutions. Simply put, 8GB of VRAM isn’t enough for many modern PC games.

Moore’s Law is Dead has been informed by an “AMD Partner” that AMD is considering discontinuing its 8GB RX 9060 XT variant and has reportedly decreased production of its 8GB GPU variants.

AMD is well aware that the 8GB version of the RX 9060 XT would not receive favorable reviews. A “much cheaper RX 9050 XT” GPU, which is expected to be released later this year, is reportedly the GPU for which AMD is anticipated to use 8GB.

AMD’s decision to discontinue the RX 9060 XT 8GB would likely benefit the PC industry. Modern games with 8GB GPUs frequently stutter more and perform worse than those with an identical GPU that has more VRAM.

That said, AMD’s top priority will likely be to provide a card that meets the current VRAM requirements while balancing performance and pricing for gamers seeking a GPU that will last for a few years.
