- Shawn Layden thinks the complicated rights associated with Bloodborne have prevented a sequel from happening.
- Any reinterpretation of the original will require approval from Kadokawa, Sony, and FromSoftware.
- The RPG sold an impressive 250k copies this year, eleven years on from its original launch.
In the modern era of remakes and remasters, it’s almost impossible to see a beloved title not get remade for next-gen consoles. Despite this mandate, however, Bloodborne has somehow avoided any remake treatment so far, with Sony not letting any studio work on the IP despite more than 10 pitches for sequels and spin-offs.
Even though Bloodborne was a commercial juggernaut for Sony, the game has remained native to the PS4, eleven years on from its launch. Now, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden has offered his take on why there hasn’t been a sequel to the RPG yet.
Why it matters: A successful and highly acclaimed video game like Bloodborne not even getting current-gen remasters due to the complications amongst its many partners is certainly shameful.
In a new interview with The Trophy Room podcast, former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden stated that complicated rights are arguably the biggest reason Bloodborne 2 hasn’t happened yet. When asked why Sony hasn’t brought the IP back in some way, Layden emphasized how the rights associated with the game and all the parties involved are the biggest challenge a remake or sequel faces.
There’s a lot of involved rights associated with it. And something like that where Sony is in there, and FromSoftware is in there, and FromSoftware’s parent company is in there.
Any Bloodborne project would need the approval of Sony, FromSoftware, and the developer’s parent company, Kadokawa. Hence, getting all three to agree on how the IP comes back to life won’t be an easy task for anyone involved.
Layden added another layer to the discourse, saying bringing Bloodborne back won’t be easy, as any sequel or remake would need to be faithful to the original and recreate the phenomenon behind the first game perfectly.

Considering how the game has sold 250k copies this year alone, bringing its lifetime total sales to 10.4 million units, Sony should be putting a lot of its energy behind reviving this IP, especially with its other exclusives not performing too well.
