Says They Wanted to Deliver An Experience That The Fans Deserve!

Story Highlight
  • GTA 6 was delayed multiple times before finally landing its November 19 release.
  • Zelnick defends the decision, stating they wanted to provide a polished experience.
  • He indirectly referenced Cyberpunk’s launch as something they wanted to avoid.

AAA game releases have had huge instances of launching in the worst state in recent years. To sort that out, GTA 6 was delayed multiple times, and the studio stated that they wanted to make sure its launch was completely polished.

Take-Two’s boss has also defended the decision, citing that a high-profile release launched in a broken state a few years ago and had to be removed from storefronts, hinting at Cyberpunk 2077’s disastrous launch.

Why it matters: Most fans agree that it’s better to delay a title rather than release it unoptimized, and CDPR had to suffer the consequences for years, so this was indeed a smart choice by Rockstar and Take-Two.

Talking to The Wall Street Journal, Strauss Zelnick talked about how delaying GTA 6 was necessary, while indirectly referencing Cyberpunk 2077’s unoptimized launch in 2020 as an example of a catastrophic release.

If you know anything about the video game business, in the past few years, there was a very high-profile release that fell into this category, and they shipped, and they had to pull the title after shipping because it didn’t work

He stated that the title was shipped and had to be pulled from the storefronts because it didn’t work. Now, the biggest high-profile release in recent years that was removed from stores was indeed CDPR’s RPG.

The studio more than redeemed itself later with major updates, but that scar remains fresh. Zelnick said the delays were necessary because they wanted to provide the experience that the fans deserve.
