- An insider says the PlayStation 6 handheld might be the only device to feature a custom RDNA5 chip.
- Sony allegedly has exclusivity on the RDNA5 custom chip, as AMD won’t make chips for handhelds with lower volumes.
- Therefore, the Xbox handheld, Steam Deck 2, and other portables won’t have their own RDNA5 custom chips.
Both Sony and Xbox are planning new handhelds for the next console generation. Not many official details about them are known yet, but it seems Sony’s PSP 2 will have a huge advantage over other upcoming handhelds from the start.
A new report reveals that the PS6 handheld could be the only upcoming mobile device to feature a custom RDNA5 chip from AMD. Sony allegedly has secured an ‘exclusivity of sorts’ on a custom RDNA5 chip, while leaving Xbox and other manufacturers in the dust.
Why it matters: Thanks to this exclusivity, the PS6 handheld could be quite ahead of the competition with a custom RDNA5 chip. We can expect it to deliver better performance, ray tracing capabilities, game optimization, and various other advantages over others.

This report comes via the latest Digital Foundry direct episode on Patreon, where reputable analyst and insider Richard Leadbetter explains that Sony has secured custom RDNA5 chips for its upcoming PS6 handheld.
It means AMD could be designing a special RDNA5-based APU/SoC for Sony, which would leave rival handheld makers like Valve, Xbox, ASUS, and Lenovo unable to acquire them.
There has been some behind the scene discussions that Sony has an exclusive of sorts on RDNA5 for handheld with it’s mobile device that’s coming.
-Insider, Richard Leadbetter.
So, other companies might get RDNA5 products but not the custom chip designed for Sony.
This would naturally put the PS6 handheld ahead of the curve with better performance-per-watt than PC handhelds, alongside giving more cache, AI hardware, ray tracing capabilities, and memory optimizations.

As other insiders previously claimed, AMD reportedly won’t create custom RDNA5 chips for handhelds with lower volumes.
A company cannot obtain a custom RDNA5 APU unless it guarantees a certain number of orders, and only Sony appears to have done so. Regardless, another insider said the PS6 handheld will cost over $600 at the very least.
