'I Don't Think We Have Ever Created Anything Close To This Before.'

Story Highlight
  • Rockstar Games aims to overdeliver on fans’ expectations with GTA 6.
  • The studio hasn’t compromised on detail for scale, or vice versa, ramping everything up instead.
  • The game will also feature an incredibly diverse set of NPCs never seen in gaming before.

The release of Rockstar’s magnum opus, GTA 6, is a do-or-die moment for the studio because of the incredible hype the title has generated over the years. Many critics argue the game might suffer from Paris Syndrome even if a lot of work has been put into it.

However, the studio appears incredibly confident in the open-world project. Rockstar Games North co-head Aaron Garbut has clarified that the developers aim to overdeliver on fans’ expectations with GTA 6, no matter how inflated they might have become over the years.

Why it matters: Rockstar Games clearly understands the extreme fan expectations for GTA 6 and is aiming to meet them head-on by dialing up scale, interactions, and detail to a level no one expects.

GTA 6
GTA 6 is shaping up to be this decade’s biggest game release.

As per Game Informer’s feature on GTA 6, Aaron Garbut clarified in an interview that Rockstar acknowledges it has a lot of pressure on its shoulders. But the team has been developing the game with the aim of overdelivering expectations from the start.

As the pressure for us on this project is huge, we dealt with that by doing our best to overdeliver.

Rockstar made sure to not make any compromises on scale for detail or vice versa, instead choosing to dial up everything with the $2 billion budget for the project.

Interactions in GTA 6 will also make the world feel incredibly alive, with over 600K animations for NPCs alone, which is over 10x the amount we saw in GTA 5.

Normally you compromise scale for detail or detail for interaction, but with this project we went the other way – everything is dialed up – detail, scope, breadth, scale, interaction and density.

Aaron also adds that Rockstar Games has never created anything close to GTA 6 before, so it’s also a massive achievement for developers.

GTA 6
The game is a major evolution over the past releases.

Regardless, the title also features over 170 animal species, dynamic weather with hurricanes and storms, and a multitude of unique side activities to enjoy.
