Xbox has come under fire once again after announcing a new wave of job cuts, a few months after laying off over 1,000 employees. Developers have come out to criticize the company, saying that Team Green has set unrealistic expectations for studios, with an ex-Microsoft executive even bashing Asha Sharma’s leadership.
From promoting developers one day, then firing them the next, this recent wave of layoffs has been nothing but bad PR for the company. However, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella seems very happy with the job cuts.
Why it matters: So far, Asha Sharma has been correctly praised for her performance as the new Xbox CEO. However, Nadella’s comments highlight that she might need to do more dirty work before the company can grow.
When asked about the current state of Xbox, in a new interview with Sources Podcast, Microsoft boss Satya Nadella stated that Asha Sharma is streamlining the company and the results are great to see. The Microsoft CEO showcased his belief in the company’s IP portfolio and its studios, saying that he feels fantastic about the franchises under the care of Xbox and believes the studios will deliver great games.
There’s some amount of streamlining the team is doing and Asha is doing which is great to see.
Nadella also outlined the company’s current goal, revealing that Xbox wants to be a great platform for games on both PC and console. However, the team is still trying to invent the right business model that not only allows it to deliver more titles to consumers, but also helps the company become stable.
The Microsoft CEO explained that the recent changes at Xbox are part of Asha Sharma’s plans to return the gaming giant to growth next fiscal year, and Satya Nadella is very happy with the results Sharma’s team is producing.
Hence, despite criticism from many former employees and industry experts for the way these layoffs have been handled, Microsoft seems content with the cost-cutting measures Asha Sharma is currently applying to Xbox.
