There Is Still A Big Market For Physical Media!

Story Highlight
  • New data reveals that many PlayStation titles had very decent physical sales figures.
  • Out of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s $1.2B revenue, almost 35% came from disc sales.
  • Despite the decent numbers, PlayStation is cancelling discs starting in 2028.

PlayStation has been the biggest topic of debate in recent months, and all for bad reasons. The biggest controversy this year has been the all-digital future that the company is imposing on the market, as it gets rid of discs starting in 2028.

It is no secret that digital media is now the go-to for most people, and that’s the reason for getting rid of physical media. But new data shows that PlayStation exclusives in recent years still had pretty decent physical sales.

Why it matters: It’s true that physical media is on a decline, but there is still a huge audience in different regions, as we saw from sales figures for titles like Assassin’s Creed Shadow, Resident Evil Requiem, and more.

Data from Alinea Analytics reveal a healthy physical share for most PlayStation exclusives released in recent years. For context, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 generated $1.2 billion, and out of this, 35% came from physical sales

Additionally, Ghost of Yotei generated $400 million, and nearly 40% of the revenue was from discs. A similar trend was observed for other major titles like GOTY winner Astro Bot, Stellar Blade, Death Stranding 2, and more.

So, despite the claims that physical media is dead, PlayStation has generated a lot of its revenue from discs in recent years. This suggests there is still a lot of demand, which is why the decision isn’t sitting well with the fans
