Gears of War: E-Day Pre-Orders Surged Above Modern Warfare 4 On Steam During Beta

Modern Warfare 4 Needs To Do Really Well After The Last Year's COD Flop!

Story Highlight
  • Modern Warfare 4 sold over 105k copies on Steam and generated $5.9 million in revenue ahead of the October 23 release.
  • Gears of War: E-Day pre-orders briefly surged over MW4 on Steam during the beta period.
  • E-Day was selling over 12k copies per day, compared to MW4’s ~1.5k, but E-Day’s sales rush ended after the beta.

Call of Duty needs to outperform expectations with Modern Warfare 4 this year after Black Ops 7 flopped in 2025 to save the franchise. On the other hand, Xbox is also preparing Gears of War: E-Day, which takes us to the origin of Emergence Day

Both games have pretty strong legs ahead of their upcoming launches. A new report reveals that Modern Warfare 4 sold over 105k copies on Steam and made over $5.9 million in revenue already ahead of its October 23 release date.

On the other hand, Gears of War: E-Day also sold like hotcakes during its beta, lasting from August 6th to 14th. The game surpassed Modern Warfare 4’s pre-order sales in this sales rush.

Why it matters: Gears of War: E-Day saw a huge boost in sales during the beta, and Modern Warfare 4 is also expected to do much better than last year’s COD due to less direct competition from other shooter franchises.

The data by Alinea Analytics reveals that both games have been competing neck and neck in sales for a while. Before and during the beta, E-Day consistently sold over 12k copies daily as compared to MW4’s steadier 1.5k sales.

This helped it eventually surpass Modern Warfare 4 on August 7th, which lasted about eight more days. However, E-Day’s sales halted as soon as the beta period ended, with only 2.3k copies sold in an entire week.

The game did not see any boost in sales even during and after the second open beta, which attracted over 400k players on Xbox. Modern Warfare 4 has kept up its steady sales climb since then, surpassing E-Day thanks to the growing pre-order-only beta hype.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has to do much better than last year’s COD experience to stand out.

MW4 took the lead on August 16th and saw a sales spike of over 6k copies in a single day, and this number is only expected to get bigger as its marketing campaign kicks in.
