PlayStation’s decision to cancel physical discs has attracted the attention of various developers. In addition to Hideo Kojima, Yoko Taro, and David Jaffe, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake director has now discussed the subject.
As per Naoki Hamaguchi, physical releases still remain important to gaming culture.
Why it matters: The physical games market has shrunk quite a bit over the years, but many enthusiasts still remain engaged in growing their collections.
Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, has pushed back against the idea that physical games should simply fade away as the industry moves further into digital distribution.
In a recent interview, Hamaguchi said physical releases remain important to the gaming industry and suggested it would be a loss if boxed games disappeared entirely.
Elaborating further, the director explained that he remains a huge fan of boxed games himself. This is why he wants to see them continue, both as a creator and a fan of the medium.
As a gamer, I love them. It would be a real shame for that culture to disappear.

With Final Fantasy 7 Revelation coming up next year, Naoki Hamaguchi’s upcoming title could be the last major Final Fantasy release to see a physical release, at least in the traditional sense.
PlayStation still intends to ship codes in a box moving forward, but the gaming giant has decided to move on from discs in 2028.
