LG Claims 480Hz OLED Monitors Can Improve Aim By Up to 38% Over 60Hz

480Hz vs. 60Hz: How Much Do High-End Monitors Actually Help?

Story Highlight
  • An internal study by LG Display shows that people can perceive high frame rates, which directly translate to better gaming performance.
  • Gamers tested blindly across different settings scored up to 38% more hits at 480Hz compared to 60Hz.
  • Running at 480Hz cut input lag by over 10 milliseconds compared to 60Hz, making it easier to track moving targets.

LG Display is challenging one of gaming’s oldest myths that the human eye can’t perceive anything beyond 60 FPS. In a new internal study, LG claims that higher refresh rates offer huge advantages, with its 480Hz OLED display helping players improve their performance in competitive games. According to a test, participants scored up to 38% more hits in a shooter game when playing at 480Hz rather than 60Hz.

The LG Display experiment included 31 adult men who identified as generalist gamers rather than esports professionals. Participants played a shooting game at four different refresh rates: 60, 240, 360, and 480 Hz. The tests were carried out blindly, with the monitor’s features concealed, and the sequence of refresh rates was randomized.

LG studied two quantitative indicators. The first was the “hit score,” which reflected the number of targets hit. The second indicator tracked the time between an enemy’s appearance and elimination. Participants were also asked to rate the smoothness of movement, the ease of tracking targets, and their overall preference for each configuration.

The data demonstrate that the hit score steadily grew as the refresh rate increased. The increase from 60 to 480 Hz produced a maximum improvement of 38%. What fascinates us the most is that switching from a more “standard” refresh rate of 200 Hz to 480 Hz resulted in an additional 10% boost. This means that there are still measurable advantages over 240 Hz, though the benefit is much smaller.

Furthermore, 480 Hz reduced input delay by more than 10 milliseconds when compared to 60 Hz. This resulted in smoother images and easier tracking of moving objects, which would have contributed to higher hit scores and a stronger subjective preference for higher refresh rates.

We can see clearly that LG wants to market its 480Hz OLED monitors, but 1000Hz monitors are currently available for people who truly desire a competitive advantage, particularly shooters. Moreover, their 480Hz refresh rate is dependent on OLED technology, which makes it relatively expensive to obtain. However, there are several mid-range solutions, including monitors with Fast IPS screens and 320Hz refresh rates for under €200.

LG Display’s comparison is also quite beneficial. According to the most recent market data, 14.4% of gamers use a 60Hz panel, 22.6% use 240Hz or above, 24.8% use 120Hz, and the majority, 38.2%, use 144Hz. This indicates that only a small percentage of people will benefit from the 38% increase in shot accuracy. As a result, 85% of players will experience a smaller jump to the most notable figure in the study.
