Led By Original New Vegas Director!

Story Highlight
  • Obsidian Entertainment is said to be working on a new Fallout title following Xbox’s restructuring.
  • The project is being led by Josh Swayer, the Fallout: New Vegas director.
  • This shift in focus is part of Xbox’s new focus on big IPs and exclusives.

Xbox’s recent debacle with layoffs is no secret at this point, and the gaming giant is now aiming for widespread restructuring to improve its management.

In particular, key first-party teams, such as id Software, have been heavily impacted by this restructuring. Xbox is also aiming for more blockbusters moving forward, and in line with this goal, a new report suggests work on a brand new Fallout title is underway.

Why it matters: With the exception of new content for Fallout 76, the Fallout series has been dormant for many years at this point.

Obsidian Entertainment Is Famous For Its RPGs

A new report from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier notes that Obsidian Entertainment has recently pivoted to a new project. Moreover, the team appears to have cancelled various other projects alongside Avowed 2.

Where the team was once planning Avowed 2, the studio is now working on a Fallout title. This is interesting since the team previously led the fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas, and there has been no shortage of demand for a sequel or remake related to this project.

Perhaps even more interesting is the fact that Josh Sawyer, the Fallout: New Vegas director, is said to be returning to Fallout with this project. The developer previously directed 2022’s Pentiment.

Because the report indicates that the project has just now begun development, fans likely won’t learn much about it for a few more years.

The Fallout series is Among Bethesda’s Most Valuable IPs

Still, this is good news for die-hard RPG fans, since Xbox could be gearing up to launch titles for The Elder Scrolls and Fallout in quick succession moving forward.
