- Xbox Series X will get a performance boost over PS5 due to AMD FSR 4.1.
- The Microsoft console offers double INT8 performance and includes modern FSR plugins that the PS5 doesn’t have.
- Of course, the Sony console can run FSR 4.1, but the boost it gets will be much smaller than on the Series X.
Ever since its launch, FSR 4 has allowed AMD to go head-to-head with Nvidia and its DLSS upscaling technology. But the company has received criticism from fans for not extending FSR 4.1 support, limiting it to new-generation hardware only.
This changed recently, however, as AMD announced that the upscaling tech would be heading to RDNA 2 devices, including the Xbox Series X. As it turns out, the Microsoft console could gain a significant edge over the PS5 thanks to AMD’s FSR 4.1.
Why it matters: Sony cutting corners in PS5 production hasn’t hurt them yet, but with the introduction of FSR 4.1 to Xbox next year, it could finally bite them in the back.
According to analysis from Moore’s Law Is Dead, the Xbox Series X will be able to run a higher quality version of AMD FSR 4.1, giving it a significant boost in performance over the PS5.
The analyst explained that Series X has double the INT8 performance compared to the PS5, boasting 48.6 TOPS versus the Sony hardware’s 20.6 TOPS. Furthermore, Xbox Series X has an APU that lies in the RDNA 3.5 ballpark, meaning that the console will get a boost similar to what PS5 Pro players experienced once it supports FSR 4.1.
Moore’s Law Is Dead clarified that it won’t match the performance PS5 Pro showcases because of PSSR 2. However, the upgrade will be massive, giving the Microsoft hardware a significant edge over the PS5.

According to the analyst, developers have also reported that the Xbox Series X has modern FSR plugins like FSR 3, while the PS5 is stuck on FSR 2.2 due to Sony’s focus on the PSSR upscaling suite.
Of course, none of this means the PS5 is too weak to run FSR 4.1, as Moore’s Law is Dead explained that hacked versions of the much weaker Steam Deck have been able to run the upscaling suite and get a performance boost. However, the improvement is much smaller compared to an RDNA 2 GPU, hence giving the Xbox Series X a big advantage over the PS5.
