- A prominent insider insists that the Steam Machine will not cost more than $700.
- He estimates Valve’s manufacturing price to fall under $600 in the worst case due to the ongoing memory crisis.
- Valve is expected to officially announce the price soon alongside a release date.
Valve’s Steam Machine is seemingly almost ready to be shipped, but the pricing of the hardware remains a topic of heated discussion. While many previously believed it would cost around $700, rising memory prices have pushed estimates as high as $1000 today.
As debates persist, a popular insider has come forward and said that anything more than $700 looks unlikely for the Steam Machine.
Why it matters: Valve’s pricing strategy will play a key role in determining how well the Steam Machine ends up doing as hardware that appeals to both PC and console gamers.
According to popular insider Moore’s Law is Dead, a $600-$700 launch price is still the most realistic and appropriate target for the Steam Machine.
In his latest video, the insider referenced his previous estimates for Valve’s manufacturing cost. He admits that rising memory prices have likely pushed those costs higher, leading to 2-3x more expensive RAM and storage.
However, Moore’s Law is Dead previously estimated a $425 price for the hardware, and even with the more expensive RAM and storage, this price does not exceed $600. The leaker also argues that Valve is likely to get better pricing through AMD when sourcing parts.
He makes the point that the Steam Machine is using a very old Zen 4-based 6C/12T CPU and a 28CU RDNA 3 GPU. As per the leaker, this hardware combo should not cost too much in the grand scheme of things, especially since it is intended to run at lower wattage suitable for mobile specifications.

Moore’s Law is Dead also argues that at more than $700, the Steam Machine would become unappealing compared to both PCs and consoles. In fact, he states that gamers could build a custom PC more capable than the hardware for around $700.
Of course, Valve’s hesitation in announcing pricing suggests these estimates might not be the most accurate. There’s a chance the hardware will indeed cost more than $700, but with evidence mounting, an official update on the matter should come soon enough
