1348: Ex Voto was surrounded in controversy and gamer backlash ever since it was announced due to its ‘woke’ themes. The single-player third-person project features a ‘masculine lesbian’ who treks through a medieval European setting to save her partner.
The game’s demo saw poor reception last month, but it was hoped that the final launch might fare much better. Well, it came out two days ago and failed to reach even 500 peak players on Steam. Most of the few users who played the experience have also rated it negatively.
Why it matters: The game has been criticized for multiple reasons by the very few players who dived into the experience, with story and combat being the biggest sore spots after its unrealistic setting.
As per the Steam tracker, SteamDB, 1348: Ex Voto’s all-time player peak is only sitting at the 427 count. While there might be a bit of an improvement in the coming weekend, the overall decline of players has been quite steep so far.
Only 75 players are experiencing the tumultuous Medieval Italy as Aeta, the protagonist with the bowl cut, at the time of writing. The protagonist is mistaken for a boy throughout her journey in the game.
Besides the controversial story and unrealistic setting, gamers have also criticized the game’s flat combat mechanics and the overall story. Many genuinely found it a bother to go through waves of guards, as the combat system seemed to be actively fighting against you.
One reviewer even said that the highly difficult ‘Getting Over It’ game was more relaxing than this action-adventure release, dubbing 1348: Ex Voto as a sloppy alpha version of a bad game ‘that was handled by a pack of drunken dry beavers.’
