The AI boom has severely impacted the gaming industry, with memory shortages driving up the prices of almost every essential component. Even a gaming giant like Valve is withholding the release of the Steam Machine due to the ongoing crisis.
Nintendo Switch 2 is another console being affected by the growing price of RAM, with the company previously admitting that the rising costs will eat into profits. Despite the impact, however, the Switch 2 will stick to its $450 price point, at least for now.
Why It Matters: Nintendo holding the fort and keeping Switch 2 prices stable despite the current situation is a testament to its fan-service and consumer-friendly policies.
In a Q&A session after Nintendo’s recent financial report, president Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the Switch 2 pricing will remain stable for now as the company doesn’t want to be overly influenced by the memory crisis.
Price changes will be determined comprehensively, taking into account not only profitability but also the adoption of the platform, sales trends and market conditions.”
According to the Nintendo president, the company is in constant contact with its business partners to maintain a stable supply of components for the Switch 2. Hence, no price tweaks are planned for the console as the shortage hasn’t impacted Nintendo too much.
Furukawa did issue a warning to fans that if the need arises, the Japanese giant won’t hesitate to adjust the cost of Nintendo Switch 2. But that is only if the price of RAM keeps increasing beyond the company’s expectations.
For now, Nintendo predicts that the overall market will continue as expected into the next financial quarter. Moreover, if the situation calls for a price hike, the Japanese giant will adjust the cost by taking into account the market, console adoption, and sales trends, not just profitability.
