The Original 1996 Tomb Raider Game Is Receiving A Makeover!

Story Highlight
  • Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis was announced at the TGA 2025 as a full-fledged remake of the first game.
  • The remake looks stunning, and Lara appears to be embracing her acrobatic skills fully in this trailer.
  • A second mainline title, Tomb Raider Catalyst, is also in the works and is set in India, with a release set later, possibly in 2027.

After over 7 years of absence from the spotlight, the Tomb Raider series is officially making a comeback, starting with a remake of the original 1996 entry, releasing in 2026.

Titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, this remake will give Lara Croft a brand-new look in celebration of the game’s 30th anniversary.

Why it matters: The Tomb Raider series is one of the most iconic ones in gaming, and despite that, many fans haven’t had the chance to check out the older entries that cemented Lara Croft as one of the great protagonists. This remake is a good start to introduce new fans to the series.

Lara Croft seems to fully embrace her acrobatic skills, as seen in her parkour movements and in doing the iconic handstand pose. Puzzles and trap sequences are also shown in the game, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis seems to be a proper action-adventure experience that fans have been longing for years.

Other than that, Atlantis looks stunning with ancient ruins and lush green forests, and threats like dinosaurs looming. The game also features underwater exploration sequences. Crystal Dynamics is developing the game in collaboration with Flying Wild Hog.

Eidos Montreal Has Another AAA Action-Adventure Game In The Works

This version of Lara Croft appears to resemble that of the recent trilogy that ended with Shadow of the Tomb Raider. However, the classic feeling of the original character is still there, and the new design appears to be a blend of modern and classical models.

This is only one of the Tomb Raider games in development; a brand-new entry set in Northern India featuring a veteran Lara is scheduled for release sometime in 2027, titled Tomb Raider Catalyst.
