Peak Classic JRPG Experience!

Story Highlight
  • Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes debut at an impressive 94% on Open Critic.
  • Reviewers praise Square Enix for keeping the classic JRPG elements alive while modifying the games with a modern feel.
  • Visually, the game is also beautiful, and Square Enix’s HD-2D style truly shines here.

Following on from the build-up to the Dragon Quest 3 remake last year, which was a highly successful endeavor from Square Enix, the developers have now remade the first two games, combined in a bundle, and almost perfected the remake formula.

Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes have now debuted with a near-perfect score of 94% on Open Critic. Square Enix has once again perfectly recreated the classic JRPG feeling while adding a modern touch.

Why it matters: The Dragon Quest franchise has been around for nearly 4 decades, but newer fans haven’t had the chance to play some of the older entries. These faithful remakes allow a newer audience to experience what made the series popular in the first place.

While it was unusual for Square Enix to start Erdrick’s trilogy with the remake of the third entry, the Erdrick story is now finally concluded with the release of Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes, which are also regarded as among the best in RPG history.

Square Enix’s HD-2D style combines the best of classic and modern graphics with 2D pixelated characters and a 3D environment that ensures that the nostalgic touch is never lost, all while offering a brand-new experience.

New story and content are also added with the remakes, but none of them will ever feel exclusive to the original games.

From the bundle, Dragon Quest 2 Remake is a far better experience, while most reviewers claim that the first entry should’ve received a bit more tune-up, but nevertheless, if you’re an RPG fan, these remakes are a must-play experience.
