It isn’t an exaggeration to say that Hideo Kojima played an important role in making Konami the massive publisher it is today. However, the creator and publisher never got along well and, in the end, had an enormous fallout, leading Kojima to go independent.

There’s a lot at Konami that could’ve been, but the publisher always had a different vision that was also a reason behind Kojima’s departure.

One such example is the Matrix directors, The Wachowskis, who once approached Kojima with a pitch for a video game adaptation, but, in a Konami fashion, the publisher straight-up rejected the idea.

Why it matters: A Matrix game would’ve done numbers at the time when the movies were fresh out and the franchise was at its peak. However, sadly, this is another story of what could’ve been in the gaming industry if the corporation weren’t so stubborn.

Publication Time Extension had the chance to speak with a former vice president of licensing at Konami Digital Entertainment regarding the Matrix project. Christopher Bergstresser told them that the Wachowskis were big fans of Hideo Kojima.

The film director sat down with Kojima and Konami, along with their concept artist, to pitch a Matrix video game. Upon the idea being translated to Kazumi Kitaue, an executive at Konami, he straight-up rejected it by saying ‘no’.

There’s a lot of speculation behind the rejection of this idea, since a Matrix game by Kojima would’ve been immensely popular at the time. Since this was in 1999, Kojima was busy working on Metal Gear Solid 2, and perhaps Konami didn’t want too much on their plate then.

Or better yet, a licensing issue would’ve been the cause since Warner Bros. held the Matrix IP. Still, as per the story, the idea wasn’t even discussed, and Konami seemingly didn’t want a Matrix game.
