  • The gaming giant also reveals that it declined a pitch to license the Horizon IP from Tencent.
  • They’re seeking $150,000 from Tencent for each separate work being infringed upon from the Horizon games.

Sony has just filed a lawsuit against Tencent, the world’s largest gaming vendor, over the claims that they’ve ripped off elements from the Horizon games with Light of Motiram.

The gaming giant has referred to Light of Motiram as a “slavish clone” of the Horizon games, demanding an immediate trial by jury.

Why it matters: Plagiarism is a highly unethical practice, and it’s surprising to see that a big player like Tencent would rip off SIE’s work.

As first spotted by Reuters, Sony filed a lawsuit for copyright and trademark infringement. The gaming giant had the following statement to make regarding Tencent and its game, Light of Motiram.

Tencent’s copying of Horizon is so blatant that the public has described it as ‘crazy,’ ‘insane,’ and ‘shameless,’

Sony also revealed that Tencent approached the gaming giant with a pitch to license the Horizon IP, which was denied. Still, Tencent’s interest in the Horizon games didn’t subside, prompting them to develop a derivative title.

Furthermore, Sony also claims that Tencent is causing “irreparable damage” to them with this game, and is trying to prevent the game’s release.

Tencent is deliberately causing numerous game lovers to confuse Light of Motiram as the next game in the Horizon series

As a result, Sony is seeking statutory damages of $150,000 for each separate work of infringement, which could amount to a substantial sum. Unlike Nintendo and Palworld’s lawsuit, this case appears to have a clear winner, which would be Sony.
