Fans Wanted A Showcase Instead!

Story Highlight
  • A new State of Play took place recently.
  • Fans expressed their disappointment over the event due to a lack of first-party reveals.
  • They wanted a full-scale Showcase instead, considering it had been two years since the last one.

PlayStation’s State of Play last night kicked off the summer season of video game reveals.

However, the start of the video game reveal season wasn’t exactly what fans had expected. The majority of fans claim that they wanted a showcase instead, and the smaller-scaled State of Play disappointed them.

Why it matters: PlayStation is lagging behind in terms of first-party AAA releases, and its upcoming slate is relatively dry. As such, fans expected something big from PlayStation, but their recent event spiralled down their hopes.

Most of the trailers at the recent State of Play were only for games that have already been revealed, such as Ghost of Yotei, Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake, and Silent Hill f. Others included indie first-party titles and third-party reveals, most notably Nioh 3 and 007 First Light.

PlayStation’s release slate for new first-party AAA games in 2025 only includes Ghost of Yotei and Marvel’s Wolverine, with the latter one probably being pushed to 2026 or later.

Recent reports have suggested several new titles from the gaming giant, starting with a new God of War spin-off title, another new IP from Santa Monica studios, and more news from the rest of the studios under PlayStation.

However, none of these titles or studios made an appearance at the State of Play, with the emphasis being heavy on indie titles.

It’s been 2 years since the last PlayStation Showcase took place, and fans had their hopes high for a new one, but the gaming giant had other plans. Recent reports have suggested that a PlayStation Showcase might take place sometime later this year, possibly in September.

It would be the perfect opportunity for PlayStation to redeem itself, especially after the summer season, when it knows everything that will be revealed during the summer season.
