Fans Believe Marathon Is More Likely To Flop Like Concord Than Even Reach Moderate Success

Very Few Argue That It Can Achieve Massive Success!

Story Highlight
  • A new poll suggests that fans have no hope in Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, as they expect it to flop like Concord.
  • Some have argued that the game will reach moderate success only and won’t be the next live-shooter hit to shake the industry.
  • The overall online sentiment is quite negative for Marathon because the fans wanted a more traditional sequel to the classic IP.

Many in the gaming scene have been waiting for Bungie’s next project after back-to-back Destiny 2 DLCs over the years. However, now that the extraction shooter, Marathon, is here, most of the player sentiment online has turned negative because of various criticisms.

Now, a new poll on social media shows that many fans believe the game is more likely to flop like Concord than reach moderate success. Very few online have claimed in defense that the game can be the next defining live-service hit.

Why it matters: Marathon already appears to be in murky waters because the majority view regarding the extraction shooter is negative, which may harm its chances of success even before it takes off.

In a NeoGAF poll, over 60% of voters believe that Marathon will flop like Concord. However, the other 39% have argued that the game will achieve moderate success with a small community, and Bungie will continue to support it with updates.

This result is the same on other forums online, with many criticizing Marathon for being a premium title in a market dominated by F2P games. Many gamers also dislike the game for its art style choices and generic gameplay.

The criticisms against Marathon are so rampant that a former Concord developer stepped in to support the developers, claiming that calling the game a failure before it’s out is wrong and players should ‘let Bungie cook.’

Marathon
Marathon has already been criticized for its allegedly stale gameplay.

Bungie has previously confirmed that Marathon will not replace Destiny 2, and the extraction shooter is also not for PvE players.

Do you think Bungie’s new extraction shooter stands a chance at succeeding as a premium game in a genre already dominated by established alternatives? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, or join the discussion on the Tech4Gamers forum.
