Huge Milestone For The Franchise!

Story Highlight
  • Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey have collectively surpassed 80 million players.
  • The playercount doesn’t equal sales since these figures include players from subscription services like Ubisoft+ or Game Pass.
  • The franchise continues to sell well with the latest Assassin’s Creed Shadows outpacing both Origins and Odyssey.

The Assassin’s Creed franchise entered a new era with the release of Origins, which shifted the series into RPG territory. This change brought in a whole new player base, marking a significant success for Ubisoft.

Now, Ubisoft has announced a major milestone: Assassin’s Creed Origins and Odyssey have each reached 40 million players individually.

Why it matters: For games that were released less than a decade ago, such high player numbers are impressive and highlight why Assassin’s Creed remains one of the biggest franchises in gaming.

It’s noteworthy that “players” doesn’t directly translate to copies sold. The actual sales numbers are likely lower. These figures include users who have played the games via Ubisoft+ or Game Pass.

Still, this is a massive win for Ubisoft. Both Origins and Odyssey are widely considered the best RPG entries in the franchise to date.

Meanwhile, Assassin’s Creed Shadows has already made waves, hitting 2 million players within just two days of release, outpacing both Origins and Odyssey at launch. It’s likely that Shadows will continue this momentum and eventually surpass its predecessors.

That said, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is still the best-selling RPG from the franchise, becoming the first Ubisoft title to generate over $1 billion in revenue.

Despite the common belief that the series is losing steam, the numbers say otherwise. The franchise continues to perform impressively, outshining many modern releases.

The series has now entered a new phase of leadership, with Ubisoft forming a new subsidiary alongside Tencent. As such, it will take its next step in evolution with a newer direction.
