Back To It's Prototyping Stages!

Story Highlight
  • Project Maverick, the extraction-based multiplayer Far Cry project, has now been rebooted.
  • For quite some time, the title was speculated to be rebooted internally, but the final nail in the coffin came after its tech team was shifted to Far Cry 7.
  • Project Maverick is now back in its prototype stages.

With the series’ longest hiatus since 2021’s Far Cry 6, Ubisoft has now gone back to the drawing board to innovate with the repetitive formula that has lasted more than a decade.

The French publisher was working on two Far Cry projects, including a mainline entry and Far Cry Maverick, a multiplayer extraction-based shooter. A new report reveals that Project Maverick has now been rebooted.

Why It Matters: Ubisoft’s track record in the past few years has been at an all-time low. Multiple cancellations and failures have led the company’s reputation and net worth to spiral down, and the tradition isn’t stopping anytime soon.

Project Maverick was expected to be rebooted internally for quite some time. However, the final confirmation came when the title’s dedicated tech team moved on to Far Cry 7’s development

Ubisoft Montreal will keep the development lead on this project, but the extraction shooter is now being taken back to the drawing board in its prototype stages. Ubisoft Sherbrooke and Ubisoft Berlin will assist in the game’s development.

Project Maverick was a part of Far Cry 7 in its early development stages before it split into a separate multiplayer project.

Still, if anything, Far Cry 7’s release in 2026 is looking optimistic, with more developers joining the project. With completely overhauled mechanics and a new setting featuring England, the new entry is poised to revitalise what would otherwise be considered a dying IP.

On the other hand, if Assassin’s Creed Shadows fails, the entire roadmap of Ubisoft releases might change. Hence, Project Maverick may even be cancelled
